SENIOR HEALTH MONTH NEWSLETTER
(November and December 2009)
November of each year the veterinary world celebrates senior pets!
DID YOU KNOW?
· Cats and dogs 7 years and older are considered senior citizens of the pet world.
· Just like humans, senior pets require check ups to ensure that any possible health issues are found before they make the pet clinically ill. In fact, it's recommended that seniors have a physical performed by the vet every 6 months.
· Seniors have different dietary requirements than younger pets. Switching to a proper senior pet food will help stay healthy longer.
· Senior pets require a DENTAL check-up to help ensure that any present dental issues are maintained. Pets with dental disease are more likely to develop kidney, heart or liver disease due to poor oral hygiene. Keeping ’s teeth healthy will help him live longer.
· Senior pets are more likely to become overweight or obese. Obese pets are prone to developing DIABETES and other life threatening illnesses. Arthritis is the leading cause of chronic and debilitating pain in overweight seniors. During every exam, our nutritional staff offers advice on how to help pets maintain proper weight for a longer and more comfortable life.
WHAT IS A SENIOR PET
WELLNESS CHECK-UP?
When a senior pet visits us for a wellness check-up, our veterinarians do the following:

- Perform a physical and dental health exam, and provide you with a consultation and a nutritional assessment. We will offer advice on necessary preventive and diagnostic procedures.
- Collect a blood sample for a wellness screen. This test lets us see the health of the kidneys, liver and other major body organs. It also checks the thyroid. Thyroid problems are common and easily treated in older pets. The screen also checks for diabetes and blood cell problems such as anemia and infections.
- Collect a urine sample and run a test to check the health of the bladder and kidneys. Older pets often develop bladder infections, stones and urine crystals causing infection. Often, these problems go undiagnosed for a long time and can be very uncomfortable to your pet.
- For a limited time we are offering a Complimentary bag or case of Medi-Cal Therapeutic Senior pet food to each pet who visits us for a senior wellness check-up. This food is boosted with antioxidants and is specially balanced to help your pet live longer by helping to prevent common problems.

TAKE THE TITO WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE!
Who's Tito?
Tito is a 4 year old Chihuahua
part-timer at our hospital. He keeps
Veronica (owner) and the rest of the
team company during the week.
He greets our clientele, but enjoys
sleeping and eating just as much.
In the last year, Tito has become very
overweight (It’s all those treats he has
been eating). Veronica put him on a
weight reducing diet but Tito still has
had no luck losing the weight.
We recently introduced a weight loss program at our hospital geared to clients who have tried everything to help their dogs lose weight. Finally, a weight loss medication is available for dogs. It allows overweight and obese dogs to feel full and satisfied after consuming less calories and food, enabling them to safely lose their goal weight in only about 6 months.
Since obesity has so many negative effects in our dogs and can significantly reduce their lifespan it is very important that pets with weight issues lose weight in a swift and healthy way.
Has you pet struggled with obesity? Are you concerned about your pet developing diabetes, heart disease or painful arthritis due to the excess weight? Now there is a way and WE ARE HERE TO HELP! So take part in THE TITO WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE and help your pet look forward to a healthy, active and long life! Thanks to our program, Tito is finally losing weight!
